Robin Kidded 3/15 - One Day Late - With QUADS!!!!
3 Does, 1 Buck
We had been watching Robin for a few days now. She's a good girl and always does her homework, loosens up, and develops an udder early. This meant that she's been looking moments from going into labor for about three days. We moved her and her daughter, April, to our kidding pen and proceeded to watch a whole lot of no-babies. Robin and April were rather pampered for the last few days and even got to wander our yard loose for a while.
Finally, a day after than her due date, Robin decided the time had come! She started having minor contractions that afternoon and started digging multiple holes to China. No spot was comfortable, up and down and dig and dig and up and down and more digging and FINALLY! Contractions began in earnest!
The first kid tried to come head first, but a bit of pushing back and I was able to fish forward one front leg. The little brown boy was trying to stand almost before he was dry!
But we didn't have much time to chat about it, Number Two was already on her way, but it took me a moment or two to figure out how she wanted to make her entrance. All I could feel were a pair of hocks, but when I followed them back, I wasn't finding the end of the leg. Following UP, I finally found hooves and were able to pull then forward so that Robin could do the work of actually pushing the girlly out. This was the first time I'd had an upside down breach, but she is doing fabulously and came out without much more difficulty! This littler girl is a black roan with a huge splash on one side. Already quite the looker!
Again, Robin wasn't going to give us a break before she started pushing out Number Three! With a lovely nose and toes position that her siblings lacked, Number three is a lovely brown girly and like her siblings was up and screaming almost immediately.
We were feeling pretty good about ourselves and Robin as we finished drying these three off; chatting about names and neat colors, when WHAT?! Robin started pushing again! I had been cleaning up the previous kid's slime and barely had my hands washed in time to catch a FOURTH kid! This black doeling came out quickly in another nose and toes position. We were amazed, this was the first quad-kidding we'd ever hand and out of ROBIN? Robin hardly looked any fatter than her usual three kids and these kids might be the strongest we have ever had! Over all, very exciting! Robin is doing well and all of these little ones are keeping us on our toes!
